Background of the Study

The proliferation of fake news has emerged as a global challenge, exacerbated by the rise of digital platforms and the speed of information dissemination. In Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, the issue of fake news poses significant threats to societal cohesion, public trust, and the integrity of media practices. Media ethics, encompassing principles such as accuracy, accountability, and fairness, play a vital role in combating misinformation and restoring public confidence in news media. However, the pressures of commercial interests, political interference, and technological dynamics often compromise ethical reporting, contributing to the spread of fake news (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2024; Yusuf, 2023). This study examines the intersection of media ethics and the challenge of fake news in Dutse, focusing on its implications for journalistic integrity and societal trust.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Fake news undermines the credibility of legitimate journalism and distorts public perception of critical issues. In Dutse, the challenges associated with identifying and countering fake news are compounded by limited media literacy, the influence of social media, and inadequate enforcement of ethical standards. Journalists and media practitioners often struggle to balance the demands of rapid reporting with the need for accuracy, leading to ethical lapses that erode public trust (Bello & Musa, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates the ethical challenges faced by media practitioners in Dutse in addressing fake news and explores strategies for fostering ethical journalism.
